I’ve been searching the internet for inspiration for some shoots. The internet is endless as well as the inspiration it draws! I will be starting a new trend on my blog. It will be a daily (semi-daily) photo that has inspired me to be better.

My first inspiration of the Day is a high fashion photo. It's very rare outside of photojournalism for a photo to give me goosebumps. When I seen this photo, chill shot up my spine!

On Sunday, Amanda and I stopped to grab a bite at a Wendy's in Buckhead. We ordered food, and turned around and seen the most amazing drink machine EVER! It is known as the Coca-Cola Freestyle. It was a touch screen dispenser with every Coca-Cola product you can image! Over 100 different choices. It was pretty amazing. I realize this has NOTHING to do with photography, but I worth sharing for sure.

Iranian Protest

After shooting the El Dia De Los Muertos celebration at The Atlanta History Center, Amanda and I ran into an Iranian protest. It was pretty intense! We were able to talk to the guys when they pulled over to regroup. They invited us to come along, and we rode in Amanda's little Yaris smack dab in the middle of the mobile protest! We rode around with them for roughly an hour and a half, ending up at an Iranian restaurant. They people were great and invited us in for dinner, and back to shoot again. Can't wait for the next event!

Professional Photographer Magazine recently posted a photo gallery that takes the viewer "behind the scenes" of a Loan Print. Over each image, the photographer has written a brief story of what it took for them to get the photo. It's such a great idea! I was also surprised to see prints show up that I've handled during the 2009 PPA IPC.

Laptop Lock

I stumbled across a lock for my laptop a few months ago. I purchased one for my friend Amanda Gardner, and me. They work GREAT for on location shoots. I suggest any photographer who takes their laptop with them anywhere have one in their bag. The prices range from about $25-$100. I was fortunate enough to find them on 1saleaday.com. They were free, I was just responsible for s/h. $9 for $80 worh of laptop locks... can't beat that! Either way, compared to the price of a stolen laptop the locks are fairly cheap. I found several on Walmart.com.

The new 1D Mark iv is pretty amazing. It's got and ISO range of 50-102,400, and a 45 Point, 39 cross-type AF system. The video above is a quick overview of the new AF system. It's pretty amazing.

BlackRapid R-Strap Review

I found an interesting article from Professional Photographer that reviews the BlackRapid R-Strap which is an interesting camera strap. It straps to the bottom of your camera or lens, where the tripod mount is. It's kind of cool. It carries you camera upside down, and slings over your shoulder. There is also a multi-camera option. Pretty cool guys! Check out the review.

Low-Key Tip!

I've noticed that in any adobe program which offers RAW 16-bit editing, i.e. Camera RAW and Lightroom, makes some automatic adjustments. For some reason the programs are defaulted to add 5 points of black. It's only 5 points, but in low-key photography the 5 points is crucial! It can be the difference between separation and no separation. You have to manually drag the point back to zero. Try it out. It will increase the shadow detail in your low-key photo greatly. Let me know how it works for ya!

It's Pumpkin Season!

My sisters and my nephew decided it would be a good idea to carve pumpkins... Halloween isn't for a few weeks and I'm sure the pumpkins wont make it! Oh well, it was fun. They got the Pumpkins from my classmate, Deanna Washington's farm, Washington Farms.

Photo Booth!

Hanging out with a couple friends this weekend, I decided it would be fun to set up a photo booth. However, rather than the photo booth being run by a machine it was run by me! I hanged a backdrop, set up a reflector and a bounce card, and went to town! It was so much fun! My friends would randomly have me take their photos through out the night. I forced some to. Overall, it was a great sucess! I will definately be doing this again.

Child Portraiture

Animal Portraiture

Last Monday, in Advanced Portraiture, we shot animals. I had my brother’s girlfriend bring their dog, Moose, in. He’s a grey Neapolitan Mastiff. He was definitely a handful! But with the help of great assistants, we dominated it for sure!

Why's my lens so long?

Last night Amanda and I went into Atlanta to shoot a little. I really need photos of people, and Finch has been telling us that the tighter the photo the better photojournalism it makes. (in most cases) I've got a 18-55 and a 75-300. I haven't used the 75-300 much outside of the studio, but it's a great lens for photojournalism. I put it on my camera, and told Amanda to not let me switch lenses! No matter what! I struggled at first, but I eventually got use to it and and absolutely amazed with the results!

National Domestic Violence Month

Clothesline Project-

An amazing presentation put together to give the childern victims of domestic violence a voice. Decorated shirts are hung from a clothesline with message from these battered children.

Candlelight Vigil-

Upon entrance, everyone was given a candle. The deication began with stories from the women who have escaped their abusive relationships. The stories were so powerful I forgot I was a photographer and just listened. I was nearly brought to tears. Once the speeches were over, the candlelight vigil began. One by one a name was called, and a candle was light. Each name was that of a victim who lost their life because of domestic violence. Each spark and newly light candle was a life. It was heart breaking.

"It's the power of water..."

Today Amanda, Demetrius, and I ventured down to Austell Georgia. We were in search of Clarkdale Elementary School. The journey to the school was an experience in it's own. We saw an animal farm flooded, a basketball court which was completely under water, a lumber yard in a rescue effort, a old lady who's septic business washed away, semi trucks swept down stream and damming under a bridge, a family frantically clearing their house and our destination, an elementary school being gutted.

The most powerful part of this trip was the people and their stories. The most memorable part of this trip was the sound of helicopters over head mixed with the sound of sloshing mud and the putrid smell of decay. All sounds were buffered, as if some turned the volume down on the world. The dried cracked mud that coated the trees was the tell-tell signs of where the water levels were just 24 hour before. Easily 10 feet over our heads, and well over the roof line of most house. This is an experience not soon forgotten.

Flood Shmuud!

I went out and shot today. My intentions were to shoot a house fire at 29 and Ronald Regan. The house was flooded, and firefighters had trouble getting to it. What an amazing find! However, Once I arrived the police had the entrance to the neighborhood blocked. There was no way I could get in. Determined to get something, I set out in search of some great photos!

Somehow I ended up off Oak Rd. The entire road was under water. I parked my car in a nearby subdivision, and walked about 1/4 past the road block. It looked like a loading dock at a lake. There were several vehicles out in the water. A red van to the right continued to sink minute by minute. I got the chance to talk to some people who witnessed some of the cars which had been stranded. A lady who lived near by informed us that a floating mound of red off in the distance was a search and rescue boat the capsized while it was rescuing the stranded. A police officer on the scene joked with everyone asking if that was their car out there as he took photos with his camera phone. Then, some teens came running out of the flooded woods, and we heard fire horns blow. They were scared and froze as we all watched a herd of firefighters coming down the blind drive yelling at the kids. The firefighters were there to retrieve their boat... :) Moments after, another officer arrived on the scene and kicked us out. On the walk back, I got to speak with a lady that lives right next to this mess. She told me her house was unharmed, and she didn't have flood insurance. If the water had broken to the right rather than the left, her house would have been floating. Just before I departed, I asked her if she was planing on getting flood insurance after this. "Um... Maybe," She responded. I smirked, put my head down and kept towards my car.

I think the coolest part about this was everyone thought I was from "the paper." In the future instead of revealing myself as a student, I will refer to myself as a Freelance Journalist.

It has been raining here in the metro area for roughly a week straight now. I'm talking POURING. Record rainfall! Lake Lanier has risen over 2 feet since Sunday. Creeks normally considered flooded at 12 feet are now over 23 feet. Gwinnett County is among the worst hit. Schools have been closed today, and will remian closed tommorow. Major roads have flooded with feet of standing water. Interstates are being shut down because of the flooding. The downtown connector, 78, i20, Ronald Regan, Sugarloaf and countless more. People are having trouble getting to and from work. What is normally a 45 minute drive has become over 5 hours, or indefinite! Houses are washing away without warning. People are dying. It's just crazy. This is the perfect time for photo journalism. I would love to go out a shoot. However, when should a photographer draw the line between safety and a photo. I've risked myself for a couple photos before, but realizing the danger after I did it. With adrenaline rushing, I didn't think. Getting the shot was my mode. How can I consciously venture out to shoot mudslides, and sudden downpours, and flash flooding, and cars being swept away with a sudden surge of water? On the other hand, I'm regretting every second I'm not out there. I guess some words of encouragement/discouragement would help.

A Fallen Airman Returns Home...

First Lieutenant Joseph Helton was killed in action in Iraq last week. Helton was flown into Brisco Airfield, and escorted through Lawrenceville, Grayson, and Loganville to his home town of Monroe. People were urged to line the streets in respect for this fallen Airman. Grayson was able to show their respect in a huge way. Two fire engines lined opposite sides of highway 20. They raised their ladders, and joined in the middle where a flag was sprawled above the highway. It was an amazing sight. Amanda and I arrived around 4:15. The clouds quickly rolled in and the winds picked up. The rain held out until moments before the escort rolled through. They were gone as quickly as they came, leaving behind flooded roads, and soaked bystanders. Last night was the 2009 Portfolio Show! It was absolutely amazing! I got to shoot the event, and in the process met some really amazing people! I got to know some of the current graduates better, and was able to meet some of the graduates from years before! I was so much fun, and I can't wait until ours... NEXT YEAR!

Hanging For the Portfolio Show!

This afternoon, the GRADUATES ;) hanged their work at Art Station. Brett, Jayne, and I decided it would be a great photo opp. and it would let us get familiar with the lighting as we will be shooting the actual Portfolio Show on Saturday. It was great! It gave us the opportunity to get to know the graduates better, and we definitely got the advantage over our other classmates. We also got a few Speedlight/Speedlite lessons from Finch! Overall, the day went off smooth! It was great to see everyone working so well together! The moral is so high with everyone, and I can't wait for the Portfolio Show on Saturday! It's going to be a good one!

"The Girl In The Picture..."

Today I was browsing the web, and came across an article the photo above. We've all seen it, and to hear the the story is so powerful. This 9 year old girl was burned over 65 percent of her body from napalm in Vietnam. She's gone through many surgeries, and has almost died several times because of her surgeries. Doctors actually told that she wouldn't survive. Now, she's a peace activist, United Nations Goodwill Ambassador and public speaker! Read about the whole story here.

I got to school bright and early this morning to shoot the upper quarter setting up for their portfolio judging. I have never been so excited and stressed for this many people before! It was fun! I shot, and Amanda flipped the whole thing. We will soon be putting together a slide show. Today got me so excited for the Portfolio Show! Sept. 12th, 2009!!! Art Station at 6:30. Feel free to come! We had an on location commercial shoot. We had to use available light, and make it great! After $60, a leaking iron, fire ants, sunburn, high winds blowing over my set, a bbq stained table cloth, horrible tripod, no light meter, loading film on my bathroom floor huddled under a blanket, and a sudden down pour, I think I've got it! I was going for a country meets big city wedding table scape. I like it.

For Photo Imaging, we have a "special project." We need to create a tarot card, or a Movie Poster. I chose to create Movie Poster. 3 hours later... TAH DAH! I shot my hand and some steak. Yummy. Everything on the poster is my own capture with an exception to the logo. I can create it myself, but I don't see the point. I found a .eps version of it. Saved me about 20 minutes. enjoy! My nephew came running inside... "THERE'S A HORSE! THERE'S A HORSE!" I like... ok, riight. I carried him outside and to my surprise there was a real live horse running full speed through my front yard! WHHHAT!? Then, some guy came running from the trees with a lasso. It was hilarious! Of course I was able to grab my camera in time and snap a few. It's been an eventful weekend for sure!

Baby Shower

Sunday I shot my friend Ashlee's baby shower. It was fun. A little frustrating because I couldn't really get what I wanted. I was hard to bouce my flash where I needed it. All the rooms were polished wood panels on the walls, ceilings, and floors. I try to blame that, but I really just need to learn how to use my flash... :) I just got it so it's taking a min to get use to.

I was driving to my brother's apt on Saturday. I got 1/2 a mile out of my subdivision and came across a house fire in the woods! The flames reached well over the top of the tall pine trees! It was an amazing sight. Well, I pulled my little butt over and went and shot it! I was able to sneak in the back, and get about 20 ft from it! It was hot. I think I got my first real taste of photo j and want more! What an adrenaline rush dude! I will have a couple photos up soon.

Coloring by Numbers

Last week, Jones taught us a very easy and quick way of color correcting! The technique is called "coloring by numbers." It's great! Combined with all the other skills we've learned, you can really make an image great!

This morning I saw the most disgusting bug ever! It had like 60 legs, and looked almost like a feather. I searched google and discovered it was a "house centipede." Blah. When I smashed it with my flip flop it blasted little wiggling legs all over the kitchen floor! It looked like a massacre.

OK... after a sleepless/helpless night I managed to throw something together for multimedia! What a relief! I thought it would be fun to show the "behind the scenes" shooting with my nephew. What a mess he is. It's always a blast shooting him! 9 times out of 10 he ends up behind the props and throwing them... as you will see in the video. I usually walk away with 1 or 2 great photos. However, I shoot several 100... :)

Slow shutter speed added a really cool effect

I scored a super sweet Rembrandt as I walked by and snapped this photo!

I've decided that my next purchase will be a flash. I've been so scared to use them because I don't know how to use them. Tuesday, my friend Ally let me borrow one of hers. I've really learned to love it! I think I got some good stuff. I shot about 6GBs. Working with it really made me realize that amount of control you have over light! I began to see where my aperture needed to be in order to get the results I liked. I also got to see how much shutter speed can affect the outcome of the image. A flash completely changes the dynamic of a snap shot! It took everything to the next level. Both of the photos above were just walk-by snap shots. Also, at the request of Amanda I played with auto focus. I have learned to love it. You are right Amanda... :\

I've had an absolute blast this quarter in commercial! The first shoot we had to use glass as our subject. The second shoot we had to use metal. The biggest thing I've learned thus far is that the reflections sculpt your subject! My glass shoot when very well! We shot all of this on chrome... how expensive. (the above photos are digital snap shots. The chromes are much better because some of the subjects were moved, and the reflections are a little off.)

Burn & Dodge

Last week in Photoimaging 3 we learned how to do non-destructive burn & dodging. I've been working on this photo for a while! I shot this photo while I was in Kansas. I've loved it since, but it needed a ton of work. The stops between the subject and sky were way to far apart, and didn't fit in my dynamic range. Rather than exposing for a specific spot, I decided it would be best to get the most information in the photo. The result was a flat photo. The burning & dodging has helped me enhance the photo and complete my vision! This is what I saw when I shot it, and not I'm very happy to share it with you. The first photo I where I started. The second photo is where I've burn & dodged. The Third photo is the result.

Hearing my friends Amanda and Peggy talk about their recent run in with photojournalist, Spencer Platt has gotten me really excited about photojournalism next quarter. I haven't been hype on it. But recently I've been taking photos of random people and talking to people and I've gotten more comfortable. Also, there is an adrenaline rush. Almost like your not suppose to be taking this photo but if you don't get it quick you will miss what most of the world can't see. I've been doing a ton of research, and looking through National Geographic and learning to love it! I can't wait! I still love me some studio though!

iLove multimedia...but not iPhoto

I am so stoked about Multimedia this quarter. For our first project, we need to create a slide show about Gwinnett Tech/Commercial Photography. The slide show must be between 1 and 2 minutes long. We also need to include a song. I guess the goal of the assignment is to get us familiar with iPhoto and different transitions/effects. I wanted my video to be an advertisement for the entire school and highlight the Photo Dept. I chose "Wish You Were Here" by Incubus. I spent a lot of time sorting through song after song. I really wanted it to give a positive message and be relevant.

We were told about the assignment last week, and have been shooting since. I was bummed when I looked at the slide times and realized I can only fit 30-40 photos in the time slot. Narrowing the photos down was even more fun! I am really happy with what I came up with. The video above is a little weird. For some reason when I burned it some of the effects were missing, and the overall slide show was sped up causing the music to be thrown off a little. I got everything saved, and will be working on it later. It's due Thursday AM. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with! Finch said that she will show everyone the best of each class, and if she feels there is one adequate enough, she will be putting it on the GTC blog!

Today, I was asked to get a photo of myself for a press release for the school immediately. Unfortunately, I was at work when I was informed of this. I didn't have a photo and I had to frantically search my facebook/myspace... yikes. I found the "best" photo I could. Somewhere along the line, it was forwarded to Mrs. Harkins. She called me and told me that the photo was absolutely horrible! HAHA! No, that's just my face. I eventually was able to get a hold of Amanda and she emailed me the photo above. I still look like a goob, but it's 10298310940 times better than the one before that I took in Seagrove 2 years ago to check my tan...I think it might have been too late, and I might be stuck looking like a hot mess to the world... :( oh well! I'm behind the camera, not in front of it! right...?

Today was the second day of summer quarter. We had Multi-media. Finch went over the assignments we will have this quarter. She also said we'd be putting together slide shows and videos. I took it upon myself to get familiar with the software and the video option on my Nikon D5000. I found a good angle, gave my nephew some chocolate, and cut on the radio!
